Getting to Know: Proteus Fitness

When most people think about dance related companies they usually think of dancewear and pointe shoes, but there are some fantastic businesses involved with dancer health and fitness. So I figured, why not share some of my favorites? And that’s exactly what I’m going to do with this edition of the blog series called Getting to Know! In these blogs, I’m interviewing some amazing brands/companies and sharing my Q&A’s with each of them. I’m so excited to shine light on my training team Proteus Fitness! Lead by Sarah Miller, Alex Gonzaga, and Kelly Gonzaga, they are certified fitness professionals who have over 20 years of combined experience in training dancers with a mission to create a healthier & stronger dance world. Enjoy my interview with my awesome trainer, Alex Gonzaga!

1. How did you all get involved in the dance world?

The team have all been dancing since we were kids. I personally started because I would accompany my sister to her ballet classes when I was young and they invited me to take a class so I did and loved it. We all met while dancing together at Atlanta Ballet.

They provide amazing custom service, even taking the time to send handwritten cards to their clients!

2. When and why was Proteus Fitness created?

Proteus Fitness was created so we could make the dance world a little bit more positive and health oriented. Helping dancers stay strong and away from injuries is our main goal.
We officially started Proteus Fitness LLC in January 2020 but we had Proteus Fitness as an Online Brand since January 2019.

3. What are some of the services you have available?

Our main services are personal training in person and online. We train anyone who wants to be a better stronger version of themselves. We also offer more budget pre made programs and Merch. I personally love the Merch!

4. Why is cross training so important or dancers?

There are many benefits to cross training; strength building, stability, proper muscle activation, endurance improvement, cardio improvement…. I would currently say that the most important one is the ability to bring balance back to the joints. When you only do ballet your muscles are only being worked one way and you are only working those muscles. By strengthening other muscles and perhaps the same muscle but through a different range of motion we start to take away a lot of the risk of injuries caused by repetitive movement.

5. Are there any new products/exercise plans or deals/promotions coming out that you want us to keep an eye out for?

While there are new products or promotions coming up, we do encourage anyone interested in our services to reach out even if you think you can’t afford it. We do our best to make it affordable and accessible for everyone and will do our best to make it possible for you!

Plus I’m not only a thrilled client but I’m also listed as a nutrition coach on their Dancer Resources Page on their website!
